The potential of OpenSource development is so enormous it is often hard to know where to start. After many years of trying different techniques I've often found the best place to start is at the beginning. In computing terms that means starting with "Hello World". Using nolabs it was possible to get a k8s hello world example running in < 1 hour. All you need is an e-mail address, an ssh key pair, and access to some basic Kubernetes instructions like those found here.
After that it might be a long road but the only limit is your imagination!!!
